Understanding You—Clearly, Thoughtfully, and Compassionately

ASSESSMENTS

At Julia Ryan Psychology, we offer comprehensive psychological assessment services designed to help individuals and families better understand learning, mental health, and emotional functioning. Assessments can bring clarity to long-standing questions, validate lived experiences, and provide a roadmap for meaningful support.

We approach assessment as a collaborative, respectful, and human process—not just a series of tests. Our goal is to help you feel seen, understood, and supported from start to finish.

We offer comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational assessments to meet the varied needs of our clients. A psychological assessment is a structured evaluation of an individual’s cognitive, emotional, behavioural, and mental health profile. When also assessing a learning profile, the assessment is referred to as a "psychoeducational assessment." Depending on the referral question, assessments may involve:

* A detailed intake and clinical interviews
* Standardized testing and questionnaires
* Behavioural observations and/or review of home videos
* Gathering information from relevant informants (with consent)
* Careful interpretation of results
* A comprehensive written report
* A feedback session to review findings and recommendations

We assess children and adults of all ages. We typically assess children 3 year of age up to adults 65yo.

Our assessments are inherently developmental; we consider the person's developmental stage, identifying strengths and needs or areas for support. Young children may meet criteria for a developmental condition like autism, ADHD or intellectual delays; other times, symptoms develop over time and may not be fully presenting at younger ages.

In all cases, obtaining an assessment means gaining more information about you or your child's functioning in order to identify next steps for support.

All children and people are still growing and developing, and results are not necessarily applicable over long periods. Depending on the needs identified in the profile, we may recommend further assessment at key time developmental periods to ensure up to date information at each stage.

Our diagnostic tests are standardized for English speakers. Administering them to a Client who is not fluent in English, or attempting to translate questions during the assessment, compromises the clinical validity of the results.

As a result, we cannot guarantee accurate findings for Clients who are not fluent in English or who are more comfortable in a different language. To ensure every Client receives a reliable psychological assessment, we currently limit our assessment services to primarily English-speaking Clients. We apologize for the inconvenience.

What can an assessment offer?

Family Involvement

Assessments offer an in depth understanding of a person's functioning across learning, emotions, and behaviors in different situations like family life, school or work, and social or community environments. Our approach is strength-based, meaning we are looking to understand areas of strength and areas of need in order to identify supports and steps to help those being assessed reach their full potential or overcome challenges they are facing.
Assessments may identify a diagnosis, when patterns of strengths and needs meet diagnostic criteria. A diagnosis is not a guaranteed part of an assessment. With or without a diagnosis, all clients should leave with a deeper understanding of themselves or their child, and a path of next steps to follow. Assessments are not treatment; you will not leave having learned new strategies for coping or support. Often, the steps following an assessment are the most important.

Family Involvement

We understand the importance of working with families and aim to involve family members in assessment procedures when it is necessary and beneficial for the Client.

For children and youth under the age of 16, we strongly encourage both caregivers to participate to help us gain a comprehensive understanding of how the child functions in different environments and to ensure both caregivers have equal access to sharing their perspective and understanding the scope of service. If you anticipate any issues with this, it is important to inform us. While not all parents choose to actively participate in services, consent and inclusion at the intake stage are required from all legal guardians to ensure ethical practice, informed decision-making, and compliance with professional and legal standards.

For adults, we may look to gather information from family members like parents or partners to help us fully understand your functioning.

Assessments are conducted by registered psychologists or trainees under the supervision of psychologists. Assessments with Dr. Ryan are usually supported by well-trained clinical assistants and psychometrists who support intakes, administration and scoring of standardized tests, behavioral observations, and report preparation. These individuals engage in regular training, supervision and oversight by our clinical director, Dr. Ryan. Please see below for a full list of our clinicians involved in assessments.

Assessments completed by psychologists are charged hourly and vary in cost depending on the presenting issue and the measures required, ranging from $3500 to $4500. In some cases, a student, trainee, or supervisee may be leading the assessment at a reduced fee, which will be offered and communicated before beginning.

The assessment process often takes 8-12 weeks in total. After an initial intake interview, there are several in person sessions usually spread across a couple of weeks. We then take time to score, review data, and process all of the information collected. A feedback meeting usually follows within 3-4 weeks of the last testing appointment, and reports are finalized and sent some time after that meeting.
